June 27th HIV Testing Day
June 27, 2005

Today is the 11th annual observance of National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) Today is the 11th annual observance of National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) As we approach the 25th year of this epidemic, HIV/AIDS remains a major public health crisis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 40,000 Americans are newly infected with HIV each year. The CDC also estimates that 1,000,000 Americans are HIV-positive, and 25% of them don't know it. When you don't t know you are infected, you are more likely to spread the disease and less likely to get the medical care you need to stay healthy.

This year's NHTD theme is "Take the Test, Take Control." The decision to take the test is the first step in taking responsibility for your health and the health of others with whom you may be intimately involved. It is also the first step in seeking the treatment and care that can improve and prolong life if you are HIV-positive.

We call upon all members of the Church to pray for an end to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and to consider taking an HIV test. You can get more information on HIV testing at www.hivtest.org
