The College Leaders HIV/AIDS Awareness Initiative

The National Catholic AIDS Network unveiled the College Leaders HIV/AIDS Awareness Pilot Program at the 17th Annual National Catholic HIV/AIDS Ministry Conference July 16-19, 2004. The pilot program is the initial phase of the larger College Leaders HIV/AIDS Awareness Initiative which has the follow goals and objectives:
- To reduce the number of new infections of HIV and sexually transmitted
diseases by raising awareness about HIV/AIDS/STDs and working with campus
leaders to develop effective strategies to reach college students with
values-based prevention programs.
- To provide up-to-date information, training resources and networking
opportunities for campus leaders to address HIV/AIDS from a Catholic perspective
through: the development of accurate educational materials, inviting campus
leaders to the NCAN annual conference and presentations on college campuses.
To raise awareness about the reality of people infected with or otherwise
affected by HIV/AIDS in the United States and throughout the world to encourage
members of college communities to get involved in responding to the HIV/AIDS
pandemic.
- To partner with other organizations, including Catholic Relief Services,
the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, Secretariat for
African American Catholics and Secretariat of Hispanic Affairs to provide
opportunities for campus leaders to network and foster an increase in the
level of awareness and response on college campuses to HIV/AIDS pandemic.
- To mentor and provide leadership development opportunities for the next generation of HIV/AIDS ministers.
Since 2005, the College Leaders Program has been a joint effort between Catholic Relief Services and National Catholic AIDS Network.
