Congratulations to our May 2026 Member of the Month (MeMo) Kevin Mungin! National College Attainment Network (NCAN) staff asked him both professional and personal questions so you can get to know him and the work he does better.

Name: Kevin Mungin

Location: Washington, DC

Alma Mater: University of Maryland, College ParkBowie State University

Title and Organization: Deputy Executive Director at College Success Foundation

Professional Questions

Q: What brought you to the college access and success field initially?
A: I have always liked helping people. I worked for an organization where I worked with adolescents and young adults who were unprepared and under-resourced when it came to planning for college and success in life. I wanted to be in a position and at an organization where I could do more to prepare these individuals (and individuals like them) to not only graduate from college but be successful in life. Now I have the knowledge, and I am in a position and at an organization where I can do this.

Q: What do you love most about your role or organization?
A: I love how the College Success Foundation always puts students first. Doing so allows us to create and implement comprehensive, research based programming and services that blend academic coaching, mentoring, and social emotional support to increase college awareness, academic readiness, access to opportunities, and improve graduation rates of the students we serve.

Q: What's your favorite thing about being an NCAN member?
A: I have many favorite things about being an NCAN member. For starters, I love the fact that NCAN is a learning organization, and they pass this knowledge along to its members. In addition, I love the networking opportunities, communicating with and learning from other NCAN members, and of course, I cannot forget the annual Conference.

Q: What advice do you have for people who are new to college attainment work?
A:
Stay green. Continue to improve your craft and stay up to date on research and best practices when it comes to this work.

Personality Questions

Every month, our MeMos will be answering some fun questions to help us get to know their “out of office” side!

Q: What's one thing you'd like to cross off your personal bucket list? Is there one thing you've crossed off already that you're really proud of?
A: I would like to cross off going to Thailand. The one thing that I have crossed off my list is becoming a homeowner.

Q: What's your favorite food, and one food you don't like?
A: My favorite food is a ribeye steak. I will not eat okra.

Q: If you could immediately be fluent in one language AND proficiently play one instrument, which language and instrument would you choose and why?
A: I would like to be fluent in French. I have always thought it was a smooth language, and I spoke it high school. I would like to be able to play the piano, because it has a calming and soothing sound to me.

Q: What’s one topic, not related to education/college attainment, that you could give an impromptu 45-minute TED Talk about?
A: Jazz and its different genres.

Q: What's on your to be read next list?
A:
Body Calm: The Powerful Meditation Technique That Helps Your Body Heal and Stay Healthy by Sandy C. Newbigging.

Leading With Courage in 2026

Posted on 1/5/2026
As we begin a new year, I am drawn to the idea of courage. I say courage rather than bravery, because bravery implies fearlessness. Courage, on the other hand, is what enables us to face adversity and continue moving forward.
