FAFSA completion is one of the most critical tasks for students planning to pursue a postsecondary degree or credential. Facilitating FAFSA completion under the best of circumstances can be challenging; the pandemic has introduced even more hurdles. Now more than ever, students need access to the financial resources they deserve so they can pursue a postsecondary degree or credential. FAFSA completion is an equity issue.

In response to this critical need, NCAN is launching the FAFSA Completion Summer Institute Webinar Series. During these three webinars, participants will learn strategies for starting or enhancing their comprehensive FAFSA completion efforts. Presenters from NCAN member programs that have successfully increased the FAFSA completion rates in their communities will share the strategies that helped them achieve their goals. After each webinar, attendees will receive planning templates for use with local partners – the goal of the Institute is that each attendee will have the makings of a collaboratively developed plan for increasing FAFSA completion in their community.

Although we encourage participants to attend all three webinars because of the logical sequence and planning opportunities built into the curriculum, attendees may choose which webinar(s) are most relevant to their community’s needs.

Webinar 1: Laying the Groundwork for FAFSA Completion

July 29, 1-3 p.m. ET

Successful FAFSA completion efforts are well-planned community endeavors. During the first of the Institute’s three webinars, hear how some communities have engaged partners in the planning (and execution) of FAFSA completion efforts.

The topics we will explore during this webinar include:

  • What sectors/partners should be involved in the planning of your community-wide FAFSA completion efforts, and what roles should they play? How can effectively run and coordinated committees increase the chances of a successful FAFSA completion effort?
  • Strategies for engaging parents/families, students, teachers and school staff, businesses, the faith-based community, community-based organizations, higher education, and others in your efforts and why it’s important to do so.
  • The role of FAFSA champions in the success of this work.

Presenters:

  • Amy Lawrence, Denton ISD
  • Ashley Warren, Odessa College
  • Chandra Scott, Mobile Education Foundation
  • Stuart Hencke, Rochester Community Foundation

Webinar 2: Capacity Building and Communicating to Increase FAFSA Completion

Aug. 5, 1-3 p.m. ET

Among the roles community partners can play are spreading the word about the importance of FAFSA completion and providing hands-on assistance to students and families complete the form. During this second Institute webinar, hear how communities have worked collaboratively to build and leverage the capacity of partners in FAFSA completion.

The topics we will explore during this webinar include:

  • Tools that are available to build the capacity of partners to assist students and families complete the form. You don’t need to re-create the wheel!
  • Creating a community-wide college-going culture and dispelling myths â€“ about the importance of a postsecondary degree, college affordability, student financial aid, etc.
  • What strategies will increase the likelihood that FAFSA completion messages will resonate with the intended audience? What are the messages, who is crafting them, who is delivering them, and through what vehicles?
  • Producing effective FAFSA completion campaigns and events.

Presenters:

  • Ben Fisher, Mesa Public Schools
  • Dr. Michael Garcia, Mesa Public Schools
  • Brittany Francis, LOSFA
  • Brittani Williams, LOSFA
  • Kelly Leon, Kresge Foundation

Webinar 3: Data Access and Use, and Introduction to NCAN’s FAFSA Resource Library

Aug. 19, 1-3 p.m. ET

Accessing and using student-level FAFSA completion data is critical to ensuring that all students complete the form. During this third and final Institute webinar, hear from communities that have successfully used data to adjust their FAFSA completion strategies and to work toward achieving equity in FAFSA completion.

The topics we will explore during this webinar include:

  • Does your community have access to student-level FAFSA completion data? If so, are they being used to target noncompleters? If not, are there ways to get (and use) these data?
  • Training community members to use analyze and use the data.
  • Data visualization as a tool for raising awareness, analysis, and action.
  • Introduction to NCAN’s new FAFSA resource library. How to use these tools year-round to enhance your FAFSA completion efforts.

Presenters:

  • Ralph A. Aiello, III, Broward County Public Schools
  • Blossom Barrett, I Know I Can
  •  Bill DeBaun, NCAN
