As we turned the calendar to a new year, the NCAN staff was also fortunate enough to welcome two new communications interns to our ranks last month.

In addition to bringing much-valued student perspectives to the NCAN team, our communications interns are important to NCAN’s efforts to continually improve our member services and advance our strategic plan goals of helping more K-12 schools and higher education institutions to adopt effective strategies for students.

Read on to learn more about Ainsley and Chris, as well as our "elder intern" Jalen Moore.

Ainsley Ash is a senior at the University of Mississippi majoring in public policy leadership. Upon completion of her studies, she intends to pursue work in the field of education policy.

While working as a communications intern, Ainsley will develop content for NCAN’s blog and social media channels by researching and reporting on best practices in college access from K-12 districts and schools across the country.

Before joining NCAN, Ainsley wrote frequently as an opinion columnist for the Daily Mississippian and as a feature reporter for Reporting South Africa. Ainsley is the founder of the Mississippi College Access Project, an organization that offers free virtual ACT tutoring and college prep workshops for Mississippi students. Ainsley believes that her identity as a first-gen, low-income student is essential to her ability to advocate for equitable education.

Christopher Amadasun is a senior at North Carolina Central University majoring in mass communications with a concentration in journalism, while also minoring in business administration. Upon graduation, he plans to earn his master’s degree in higher education administration, as he aspires to work in postsecondary education.

As a communications intern, Chris investigates stories that promote NCAN’s mission statement. He focuses on writing informational pieces and creating video content that tells the stories of K-12 students and their transition into postsecondary education.

Prior to joining NCAN, Chris worked for UnmutedCo, where he was a news and media intern. He was responsible for creating daily content such as articles and podcasts that appealed to America’s urban communities. While there he focused his time on reporting on issues that affected minority students at universities across America.

In another good news update: Jalen Moore, our communications intern who joined us in the fall, will be staying on board for another semester!

Jalen is a junior at Brown University concentrating in Religious & Africana Studies. After completing his undergraduate education, he aspires to do work in digital communications or investigative journalism.

As a communications intern, Jalen works to expand and promote NCAN’s policy communications and advocacy work through social media, blog posts, newsletter articles, and graphic design. He will also collaborate with NCAN members to share stories about their work and their students.

Prior to joining NCAN, Jalen interned for the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, working closely with the Dell Scholars Program team. He created and designed a guidebook for the Dell Scholars “Campus Liaison” pilot initiative that seeks to familiarize its scholars with their respective campus resources and build community. Additionally, he worked with the Scholar Snapp team to add and update scholarships to its database as well as with the communications team to develop a story for the foundation’s website. As a low-income student himself, Jalen is excited to join NCAN’s efforts advocating for equity in education.
