The National College Attainment Network (NCAN) is honored to announce receipt of a $97,500 grant from our longtime member and partner the Trellis Foundation to support our 2023 National Conference taking place in Dallas, TX, the foundation’s home state. The grant is intended to ensure that a critical mass of Texas college access and success professionals can attend the conference, participate in professional development, and share their effective practices with colleagues from across the country.

“We are so grateful that the Trellis Foundation shares NCAN’s commitment to convenings as an opportunity to build organizational capacity, spread best practices, catalyze collaboration, and advance strategies for policy change,” NCAN CEO Kim Cook said. “Trellis Foundation’s leadership in Texas is advancing opportunities for low-income students and students of color to attain, afford, and complete postsecondary education, especially through holistic student support, streamlined student pathways, and reconnection for returning learners.”

The conference will feature several plenary speakers from Texas, including El Paso Community College President Dr. William Serrata, Dallas Poet Laureate Joaquin Zihuatanejo, Academic Success Program Executive Director Sara Urquidez, and three college students. Conference attendees will also be able to attend the final round of the TxCAN Pitch Competition seeking scalable, high-impact practices from around the state. Additionally, nine workshop sessions will be led by Texas organizations.

As part of the sponsorship, NCAN will award 35 conference scholarships to individuals from Texas to reduce the financial burden of attendance. NCAN members in Texas and TxCAN partners should watch their email for instructions on how to submit a very brief scholarship application by June 30. Each scholarship will include:

  • One conference registration ($725 value)
  • Up to three paid hotel room nights at the Hyatt Regency Dallas conference hotel (Sunday, October 15-Tuesday, October 17)

Scholarships are available to employees of NCAN member organizations in Texas or organizations that submitted a proposal to TxCAN’s Pitch Competition in May 2023. Preference will go to individuals that directly support students with college access and success services or their supervisors and to those who have not previously attended the NCAN conference. Only one scholarship per organization will be awarded. NCAN will notify scholarship winners by July 14.

The Trellis Foundation's support for NCAN’s 2022 conference in Atlanta allowed NCAN to double attendance from Texans, and 81% of the conference scholarship recipients were first-time attendees.
