Note: Since this article was originally published, FSA has announced that the Better FAFSA will open by December 31, 2023.

With the fall semester in full swing and the Better Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opening date drawing closer, the National College Attainment Network (NCAN) is excited to announce the launch of our much-anticipated Better FAFSA Training Toolkit! This web page is your one stop shop for Better FAFSA training tools and resources from NCAN, our partners and members, and the Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA). We encourage you to bookmark this page as it will be regularly updated.

The Toolkit contains a variety of materials, including:

  • Training slide decks from NCAN, uAspire, and FSA
  • How-to articles
  • Training opportunities (both virtual and in-person)
  • Recommended readings
  • Resources and tools for students and families

NCAN is also incorporating select training materials developed by member organizations when and where appropriate. If you or your organization have developed any tools and resources to train practitioners, students, or families on the Better FAFSA that you believe could be useful for the field at large, please email them to NCAN’s Senior Director of Strategic Programming MorraLee Keller (kellerm@ncan.org) for consideration.

Given its comprehensive changes and delayed opening, now is the time for anyone working on FAFSA completion to get trained and familiar with the new form and process. Given that students in many states will have less time to apply for financial aid, training now will allow you to save time and ensure you’re prepared to aid in FAFSA completion efforts this winter.

The Training Toolkit is just the latest Better FAFSA-related asset that NCAN has launched in recent months. Check out our full suite of Better FAFSA-related materials here, including an Awareness Toolkit, free training webinars, and State Policy Toolkit.
