National College Attainment Network (NCAN) members continue to staff Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) sessions this month at 20 Capital One Cafés across the country. The drop-in sessions are made possible by Capital One and hosted at Cafés in the community.

Last Saturday’s FAFSA event at the Capital One Café in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, DC drew record attendance. The College Success Foundation-DC (CSF-DC) team met with over 100 students, including students from the African Diaspora College Access Program, to complete FAFSAs, apply for DC Tuition Assistance Grants, and answer questions about college-going. Students can receive continued support from CSF-DC as well as Mainstay’s chatbot.

“We’re pleased to be in the community serving DC students,” said Kevin Mungin, director of programs at CSF-DC. “Our thanks go to Capital One for giving us a great location and support for our team to staff the event. I would also like to thank NCAN for choosing and trusting us as a partner to provide this service to the student and the community.”

US Deputy Secretary of Education Cindy Marten dropped by the event to talk with students and encourage FAFSA completion. “The NCAN Capital One Café FAFSA Advising Session in Anacostia, DC was a great example of a community event where students and their families could get their questions answered and FAFSA forms submitted,” said Marten. “High school seniors and returning college students should submit their FAFSA forms now, and in-person events like this move the needle towards achieving that goal. As we get ready for our national FAFSA Week of Action, which is taking place on April 15-19, we hope to see similar events around the country.”

Latest results from NCAN’s FAFSA Tracker show that just 32.3% of high school seniors had submitted a FAFSA as of March 15, down 30.7% compared to this point last year. It is imperative that organizations and their partners (like NCAN and Capital One) unite to get this number up and ensure more students from the class of 2024 have the opportunity and ability to pursue a postsecondary education.
