Preparing for college can feel overwhelming for students and their families, from managing applications and financial aid forms to keeping track of deadlines and making big decisions about their futures. The good news? There are plenty of free tools designed to make your college bound journey smoother, less stressful, and more organized.

Whether you're the first in your family to attend college or looking for resources to stay on top of the college application process. Here are five free tools every college-bound student should know before taking the next step.

1. Mapping Your Future

It’s completely normal to feel uncertain about your future or your academic and career goals. Exploring different pathways can provide clarity and help you better understand your options. This site facilities that process by offering tools and opportunities tailored to your strengths and interests, guiding you toward potential career and fields of study that align with your goals.

2. BigFuture College Search

BigFuture is a free college planning tool from the College Board that helps students explore schools based on academic interests, affordability, and admissions data. One standout feature is the ‘Reach, Match, Safety’ tool, which uses your Grade Point Average (GPA) and standardized test scores to suggest colleges that fit your profile, making it easier to build a balanced list and avoid undermatching.

3. Official Digital SAT Prep

With the recent rollback of test-optional policies, strengthening your SAT scores is essential to meeting the standardized testing requirements of the institutions you’ve identified through your BigFuture College Search. This resource has a digital curriculum to prepare you for the SAT Math and SAT Reading and Writing.

4. 12 Strategies to Writing the Perfect College Essay

Writing personal statements and supplemental essays is your chance to show the admissions committee who you are beyond test scores and GPA. These essays are opportunities to highlight your background, interests, and special circumstances (if applicable) to provide insight into who you are. Lead with authenticity and capture your reader’s attention right from the start with a strong hook!

5. 100% Need-Met Institutions:

The financial costs of pursuing a postsecondary education can be daunting, but exploring this map of institutions that offer need-based aid can help. Many colleges and universities are committed to making education financially accessible, which can make the difference between an overwhelming financial strain and an achievable investment in your future.

The National College Attainment Network (NCAN) and our member organizations are here to support students every step of the way on their journey to and through college. These resources are designed to serve as a helpful guide for college bound students!

Something all students and families should keep on their radar is the upcoming launch of the 2026-27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), set to open October 1, 2025. Check out NCAN’s FAFSA page to get ready and stay informed about the upcoming application cycle. Together, we can ensure all students can pursue their postsecondary goals.
