Data are crucial to successful FAFSA completion efforts, and both NCAN and Form Your Future place a strong emphasis on tracking and sharing publicly available FAFSA completion data.

For three years, NCAN’s flagship #FormYourFuture FAFSA Tracker has examined FAFSA completion progress among high school seniors at the national, state, city, district, and school levels. This interactive dashboard helps users track FAFSA completion by percent change year-over-year and by percent of the current senior class that has completed.

This spring, NCAN added a number of new dashboards to the Form Your Future effort. After the COVID-19 pandemic started to show negative effects on high school seniors’ FAFSA completion, NCAN added a new dashboard tracking completion by high schools’ geography and Title I status and highlighting the pandemic’s effects on FAFSA completion nationally.

Using data provided by Federal Student Aid, NCAN also created a dashboard displaying trends in FAFSA renewal data for the 2020-21 cycle. This dashboard shows significant declines in FAFSA completion, similar in direction to those of high school seniors’ but with even greater magnitude, among currently enrolled college students. There’s also a dashboard with state-level FAFSA renewal trends.

NCAN will continue to update these various FAFSA Trackers as new data become available. Connecting practitioners, policymakers, and the public to the very best and most recent data available remains critical to helping students access and complete a postsecondary pathway.
