Earlier this fall, NCAN released recommendations for school districts on to help this year’s high school seniors stay on track for a postsecondary pathway in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. This brief – "4 for the Fall" – from Bill DeBaun, NCAN’s director of data and evaluation, focused on immediate actions for the beginning of the school year.

To build upon this work, NCAN partnered with the Education Commission of the States to share a new brief that examines the next phase of actions needed from both states and districts to not only keep students on track through the fall, but through high school graduation and the summer.

That brief, “Supporting the Class of 2021 Through Postsecondary Transition,” is available now.

Bill and I, along with MorraLee Keller, NCAN’s director of technical assistance, outline policy suggestions to:

  • Address systemic barriers to college access exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Adapt data driven decision-making to the virtual environment.
  • Leverage federal funds to support postsecondary transition.

The students NCAN members serve – students of color, students who are first in their family to go to college, and students from low-income backgrounds – already face inequitable barriers in transitioning to college (as Bill outlined in 15 graphs here). The pandemic is only making those barriers worse, which means additional action is needed.

NCAN invites our members to explore the brief and to share it with your district leadership, state secondary and higher education agencies, and state-level elected officials.
