Reading time: Two minutes

Today is GivingTuesday, a day when people worldwide, including National College Attainment Network (NCAN) employees, will give to nonprofit and charitable organizations that are close to their hearts. This includes NCAN, which we hope you’ll consider supporting if you do decide to give. Not only will people donate their money, but they’ll also give their time, energy, and resources to those in need. I recently sat down with a few of our employees to discuss which organizations they plan on supporting.

     Catherine Brown: Urban Adventure Squad

Brown is NCAN’s Senior Director of Policy and Advocacy. This GivingTuesday, she will be supporting Urban Adventure Squad, a Washington, DC-based nonprofit education organization. Their mission is to, “support K-8 schools and school communities with neighborhood-based, hands-on learning programs that focus on the outdoors.” They do so through full-day programs during out-of-school time and breaks. They also partner with schools to connect students to their neighborhoods with curriculum-aligned activities relating to science, history, math, art, engineering, and writing, and to train teachers in outdoor learning.

Kim Cook: Fisher House Foundation and March of Dimes

NCAN CEO Kim Cook will be supporting both the Fisher House Foundation and March of Dimes. The Fisher House Foundation provides homes at military and Veterans Administration centers worldwide where families of can stay, free of charge, while their loved one is in the hospital. There are 93 houses in operation, and approximately 430,000 families have been served. Founded in 1938, March of Dimes' mission is to end the preventable maternal health risks and deaths, end preventable preterm birth and infant death, and close health equity gaps.

Caroline Doglio: Ballet Books and FLIP National

Doglio, who is NCAN’s Program Associate, will be supporting two nonprofit organizations: Ballet and Books and FLIP National. Ballet and Books is, “a national, non-profit organization striving to reduce the literacy gap through the hybrid storytelling of dance and reading.” They’ve helped nearly 400 children and students since their founding, and are on track to help 100 more by the end of 2022. FLIP National promotes equal opportunity for first-generation and low-income students in institutions of higher learning. Established in 2015, they now serve approximately 15,000 students in 29 chapters.

Colette Hadley: Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara and The Wooden Floor

NCAN’s Senior Director of Consulting Services will be giving to the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara and The Wooden Floor. The Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara, established in 1962, provides scholarships to eligible students from Santa Barbara County, CA, for college, graduate, and vocational school education. In May of 2022, they awarded more than $7.7 million in scholarships to 2,139 students. The Wooden Floor’s mission is to empower youth from low-income backgrounds to strengthen self-esteem, self-discipline, and their sense of accomplishment through dance, academic, and family programs. To date, more than 95,000 youth have been impacted by the work they do.

On this GivingTuesday, we hope you'll consider giving to NCAN so that we can continue to build, strengthen, and empower communities and stakeholders to close equity gaps in postsecondary attainment for all students.
